About.ATLS is a trademark program administered by the American College of Surgeons (ACS), and is a required credential for all physicians & residents working in trauma related areas. Our priority is the rural physicians and trauma providers within the province of Saskatchewan. The course consists of 16 student physicians, 6 health care professional auditor positions, 8-10 instructors, and many volunteers for scenarios and equipment set-up. We have tried to provide 5 courses per year. Certification is given with success of both written and practical demonstrations.

Established in 1976The ATLS course arose from the zeal and passion of a small group of surgeons intent on improving patient care. When orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Styner encountered a woefully inadequate response to the needs of his children injured in a light plane crash in rural Nebraska. He spurred the development of an organized systematic approach to the evaluation and care of the injured patient.. This approach was then adopted by the committee on Trauma and since then, the course has been developed and refined year after year.
